What family doesn’t love free outings? Saving money ALWAYS feels good. My family recently moved to a new state and finding things to do with my son was important for us because we stayed so busy back home. What I’ve learned is that there are things you can do in almost any town or city for free.
1. Free Zoo Days
Every city we’ve lived in or near that has a Zoo has at least one free day a month and we always take advantage of them. They usually pick the same day of every month. For instance, our Zoo here in Denver does free admission days on the first Sunday of every month. It’s a great opportunity to go with a big group without it costing an arm and a leg. I don’t know about your kids but some of my best memories with my son were days spent at the Zoo.
2. Free Museum Days
This one is especially great because in most major cities there are many kinds of museums that participate in free days. Children’s Museums and the Science museums are always a big hit with all of the kids I know. But did you know Art Museums do free days too? Art museums are a nice way to get out of the house with a little sleeping baby. We used to walk the Art Museum while my son slept in the stroller, it was a nice way to get out and have a break.
The town we live in now has twenty-seven parks with playgrounds and it is not a very big city. The week we arrived my son and I went to a different park every day and loved every minute of exploring. We now have our favorites and go several times a week. I suggest looking online for a list or map of all the parks in your city.
4. Hiking & Biking Trails
It is so great that we live in a time when hiking and biking trails are so easily accessible. You can usually find a list of these trails and their amenities listed online as well. When the weather is good, we will do just about anything to be outdoors. And this is one way for everyone to get some exercise and have fun at the same time.
A library offers so many cool free events and so much socialization. We also do our homeschool work at the library from time to time to mix things up. Reading clubs, maker fairs and story time are just a few things most local libraries offer. Getting my son interested in reading is so easy with such a variety of books and interests for him to choose from. I highly recommend checking out your library, I think you’ll be impressed with how much you can experience there.
6. Botanical Gardens
Family photos, picnics and educational trips are just some of the things we’ve enjoyed at the local botanical gardens. It’s a great place to make learn, good memories and enjoy good sunshine. If your town doesn’t have a Botanical garden I am sure a nearby town does, check online with this one too!
7. Farmer’s Markets
This one is fantastic way to meet local producers and support small companies. In my experience some towns even have events and live music at their farmer’s markets. Our local farmer’s markets are running every Saturday weather permitting. I can’t tell you the good quality and interesting things you can find at a market like this if you’ve never been. Something we love about these kinds of markets is that you find fantastic local produce but also non food items like homemade candles and jewelry.
Spring is coming and we can’t wait to get outside more. What about your city? Is there something cool that is free to do with family in your town? Please share with us, we’d love to see if it’s offered in our town too!
